Initial Ideas for Magazine Cover

Layouts

1. Title behind photograph, Heading over photograph, Text in the corners of the page.

2. Large banner at the top of the page, Title over the top of the photograph, text in the top half of the page and down the sides, banner at the bottom of the page.

3. Banner across the top, title over photograph, heading and sub-heading at the bottom of the page. Text down the side of the page.

Initial idea 3 has a banner across the top and the title lies over the photograph. The heading and sub-heading are layered on top of the main photograph. The text is then printed down the side of the page. Initial idea 1 has the title behind the photograph, the heading also layers over the photograph and the text is put around the corners of the page. Initial idea 2 has a large banner at the top of the page like initial idea 1. The title lies over the top of the photograph, the text has been placed in the top half of the page and down the sides, and there is also a banner at the bottom of the page. My favourite layout and the one that I would mostly likely use as a layout for my own magazine would be layout 1. I like the way that the text has been placed in the corners of the page. I also like the way the heading lies across the photograph. However I don’t like the way the title has been layered under the photograph and this would be something that I would change to my magazine front cover.

Colours

Grey, red & black

Brown, white & red

Brown, white & red

White, green & black

I like all these colour themes for my magazine. They all have different moods to them however the colour theme that I think would suit my magazine best would be brown, white and green. I think these colours would be best because brown, green and white are quite earthy, countryside colours that can be easily associated with country music and by looking at my poll brown, white and green have been the colour theme chosen by most people who have taken part.

Fonts

I like all of these fonts they are modern and old and I think any of them would look good on my magazine cover however I think the fonts that would best suit the style of my magazine would be Rockwell, Baskerville Old Face and Goudy Old Style. These font styles are quite country looking and look of quite an old style so I think they would contrast together well.

Stories

Here are a few rough storylines that I could use and develop as headlines towards my magazine.

(Name of celebrity) has first number one!

(Name of celebrity) reveals all about her latest tour!

(Name of celebrity) at the Brits 2010!
(Name of celebrity) reveals all about her latest album!

Magazine Titles

To help me come up with some magazine titles I drew two mind maps, one for the word ‘Country’ the other ‘Music’. With the words that I thought of on each mind map I took the most effective words that were best for my magazine and put them together to creates some titles.
Southern Stereo
Country Beat
Guitar Beat
Strum
Country Rhythm
Country Notes
Country Sound
Country Noise
The title that I think is most effective and would suit my magazine best would be Country Notes. The word note is quite soft and usually associated with love, love notes, like the popular romance film The Notebook. The word also links with notes as in musical notes and the soft word links with the softness and peaceful of the countryside.
Photo ideas
Here are some photos from www.pixielott.com and www.katevoegele.com. I really like these photos and each have something about them that I would like to add to my own photos to use for my front cover.

I like the mirror/reflection element in photograph 1 as it’s clever but simple. I also like the way that Pixie Lott has been styled. The way her hair has been styled would be a good hairstyle to use on my own model however I don’t think that the bathroom setting would be a good idea for my country music magazine.

In photograph 2 I like the way how Kate Voegele is sitting on a dirty run down block. This sort of prop would fit well within my photo shoot however I don’t think a dress like the one she is wearing would be suitable.

Photograph 3 is one of my favourite photographs. I love the way that Kate is sitting on her guitar this photo would be perfect for the front cover of my magazine as a guitar is one of the main instruments used in country music, this picture will influence my own images a lot and a guitar will be a prop that I will have to include in my photos.

Photograph 4 is also another of my favourite photographs. This style photo would be great for the front of my magazine and Kate has be styled in clothing that clearly resembles a country feel and the guitar definitely adds to the country theme.

I like the way that Kate is posing in photograph 5, I also like her clothes and hair however I don’t think that the style will be a suitable influence for my own magazine. I like the wall as the backdrop and I think that it could be a good influence to include in my photo.

I like photograph 6 as it’s cool and modern however I don’t think the way that Pixie has been styled would be a good style for my photo shoot however I like the idea of having a chair as a prop. This may be an idea that I could use for my own photos.
